AA battery: An exclusive concept

An AA battery, basically a dry cell-type battery generally used in portable electronic devices, is having large user responses at the moment. If we go to history, AA battery type was standardized for the first time by ANSI in 1947, and is selected E91 by DIN and AM3 by JIS. However, in the global plane, the IEC designated it being LR6 (alkaline), R6 (carbon-zinc), KR157/51 (nickel-cadmium), HR6 (nickel-metal-hydride), and FR6 (lithium-iron-disulfide).

While in China AA battery is known as the #5 battery, in Germany it is called as Mignon. Keep in mind that an AA battery is composed of a single electrochemical cell. In a nutshell, an AA battery measures 51 mm in length (50.1 mm devoid of the button terminal), 13.5–14.5 mm in diameter,(1.97×0.56 inches). On the other hand conventional alkaline AA batteries consist of mass of approximately 23 g (0.81 oz), Lithium AA batteries have mass around 15 g (0.5 oz), and rechargeable NiMH batteries have mass about 31 g (1.1 oz).

Let’s focus on other features of AA battery then. Experts indicate the ostensible output voltage of single-use AA batteries is 1.5 volts, while NiCd and NiMH rechargeable batteries contain a nominal voltage of 1.2 V. On the other hand specialty batteries based on more extraordinary chemistries can operate at a voltage as high as 1.6 V under load.

Learn by heart that the voltage of an AA battery is equal to a AAA battery, C cell or D cell. AA battery, nonetheless, renders power for a longer period than AAA battery.
